Tropical Boom: Ecuador Takes the World by Storm with Exotic Fruits
Ecuador is experiencing a stellar moment in the international tropical fruit market. Between January and August 2025, exports grew by an impressive 38%, driven by the rise of non-traditional products such as dragon fruit (pitahaya), pineapple, granadilla, tamarillo, and lulo. Dragon fruit led the way with a 40% increase, strengthening its presence in key markets like the United States, the European Union, and Canada. Pineapple also stood out, reaching USD 52 million in exports, while lulo surprised with a 367% growth—solid proof of global interest in Ecuador’s unique offerings.
This growth extends beyond the best-known fruits. Emerging products like red blueberries, curuba (banana passionfruit), and mangosteen are gaining ground in high-demand markets such as the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. Even lesser-known fruits like soursop, cherimoya, and avocado are performing well, aligning with a global trend toward healthy, exotic, and sustainable foods. Ecuador is not only diversifying its products but also expanding into new destinations, with recent market openings in Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and more.
The Ministry of Production credits these achievements to a national strategy focused on diversification and internationalization, promoting high value-added products. This export boom is positioning Ecuador as a leader in exotic fruits while boosting the rural economy and creating jobs in the agro-industrial sector. Through innovation, quality, and sustainability, Ecuador is planting the seeds of its future in the world’s most competitive markets.
