Demand for Exotic Fruits Growing in Russia

In Russia, interest in mangoes is declining; however, consumers are increasingly turning their attention to other exotic fruits, which are becoming more competitively priced. According to research by NTech, retail sales of fresh mangoes over the 12 months ending in June dropped by 34.7% in monetary terms compared to the previous year. This decline followed a “mango boom” sparked by the pandemic, during which tropical fruit sales in some retail chains surged by 3 to 4.5 times.

Current season demand for mangoes is slightly higher than last year, driven by growing consumer confidence and expanded supplies from various countries. Nonetheless, payment issues with foreign banks due to sanctions risks are complicating imports, especially from Egypt, a key mango supplier to Russia.

Meanwhile, interest in other exotic fruits such as papaya, pitahaya, and mangosteen is rising, with their market availability steadily increasing. This shift in consumer preference is supported by stable or even lower prices for exotic fruits compared to more traditional options like bananas and apples, whose prices continue to climb. For example, a kilogram of Egyptian mangoes in supermarkets costs €3.40, 10% less than last year’s prices.
