Ecuadorian Mango Expands in International Markets
Sembriexport continues to strengthen its role in the growth of Ecuador’s mango industry. The company currently manages 1,606 hectares under production, with an additional 370 hectares in development, reflecting its commitment to expanding and reinforcing the sector. After a weak season last year, when exports reached approximately 8 million boxes, Ecuador has rebounded strongly this year, exporting an estimated 15 million boxes of mangoes, marking a significant recovery.
The Tommy Atkins variety remains the country’s leading export mango, accounting for around 60% of total shipments. Two years ago, Ecuador exported 14 million boxes, and the recent increase is attributed to both higher production levels and the entry of new exporters into the market. During the current season, Sembriexport alone has shipped 1.8 million boxes, with nearly all of its volume destined for the U.S. market.
At present, 97% of Ecuadorian mango exports are sent to the United States, while the remainder reaches Canada and other secondary markets. Over the past six to seven years, national mango production has grown from 12 million to 15 million boxes, positioning mango as a key product in Ecuador’s export portfolio. However, amid strong competition from Peru, Mexico, and Brazil, diversifying export destinations has become a strategic priority to ensure long-term, sustainable growth.
